Hague Dufourt’s first evening-length work for six percussionists was completed in Strasbourg in 1976 – the same year that Concorde was built. Dufourt composed his second, Burning Bright, in 2014 in a much less optimistic world with much less faith in technology. Much like the English poet William Blake, who followed his «Songs of Innocence» with «Songs of Experience» in 1794 – and from which Dufourt takes the title for his dark masterpiece. The Percussions de Strasbourg’s recording of the work was named Recording of the Year at the Victoires de la Musique Classique and won the Diapason d’or. Here they perform it in an opulent staging with designs and lighting by Enrico Bagnoli.
