Growth

Wien Modern 32
28.10.–30.11.2019

Following the record-breaking edition of Wien Modern in 2018, this may be the right time for the festival to explore growth. But the reason why growth is the theme of the new 32nd edition of Wien Modern in November is a very simple one: as an art of the immediate present, music taps into the heartbeat of our time in its own very special way. Wherever you look, the motto of our world seems to be »faster, higher, stronger«; but there are other possibilities for our ears: time lapses, developments, balance, duration, intensity and dosage are all almost tangible in music – endless lengths and minuscule moments, dramatic climaxes, abstract plains, constant changes and fades into nothing.

Amid a constant pursuit of progress, crumbling growth forecasts and multi-channel overload, the art world of music provides a space for very long and intense aural experiences, as well as tiny, delicate, ephemeral and almost disappearing forms. A number of artists demonstrate during Wien Modern 2019 that it isn’t that difficult to untangle the concept of growth from the one-sided interpretation that has been thrust upon it by its one-dimensional uses in economy, urban planning and politics. From extreme reduction to excessive abundance and back again – the eternal search for just the right measure, somewhere between too much and too little, has seldom been so tangible in music than it is today.

In November 2019, you’ll be able to explore maximalism and minimalism in various forms at venues all across Vienna: a description of a volcanic eruption in the opening concert by the RSO Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of its new chief conductor Marin Alsop. The end of an ensemble and the beginning of something new. A work of unprecedented length, intensity and expressiveness you can visit between the end of one night and the beginning of the next, whenever you like. Major, world-encompassing works such as Dieter Schnebel’s Sinfonie X. Tiny miniatures you might encounter in a museum. The Ring tram as an endless locked groove. And (for young people, too) the opportunity to hear grass grow. We look forward to many different encounters with you at Wien Modern 32!

Marin Alsop is taking up the baton as the first female chief conductor of an Austrian orchestra. The country’s most senior ensemble, die reihe, is saying farewell. What could be a more fitting start to the festival and its theme of growth than a volcanic eruption? The violent outbreak of the Hekla volcano in 1947/1948 has been transformed into one of the loudest pieces of music of all time by Jón Leifs, who witnessed the event ...
