Brian Ferneyhough’s hour-long Opus magnum »Umbrations. The Tye Cycle« for ensemble and string quartet makes the highest possible technical and interpretive demands on the evening’s star performers. The scores of the British grandfather of New Complexity, who turns 75 this year, stretches the limits of what is technically possible. While his work makes fragmentary use of the small groups of musicians, the world premiere of a new piece by James Saunders uses both ensembles concurrently. The 30-year age difference to his compatriot is also noticeable in his use of game and social theory, group and swarm intelligence: his music demands lighning fast reactions from fellow players, and the ability to give orders. Sportsmanship will also be much in evidence in the Late Night Concert that follows – Irvine Arditti solo.
