A festival weekend in Semperdepot with three of the world’s top ensembles, the delicate music of Roman Haubenstock-Ramati, high-flyer Enno Poppe and a contagious world premiere by Elisabeth Schimana. Part 1: Freiburg-based ensemble recherche wasn’t only founded in the same year (1985) as Klangforum Wien, it also shares a place in the international top league and it shares a love for the music of Roman Haubenstock-Ramati. Born in Krakow in 1919, the grand master of floating sound died in Vienna in 1994. In Paris in the 1950s, he got to know Jackson Pollock and Alexander Calder, after which he developed his very own graphic form of musical notation and a mobile musical language. A celebration of the high art of performing (almost) without a score – and, as a contrast, Brian Ferneyhough’s meticulously notated and breathtakingly performed Sextet will close the concert.
