Cornelius Cardew

What exactly is a »scratch orchestra«? It is an orchestra made up of different age groups and backgrounds and was described in 1969 by British composer, activist and improviser Cornelius Cardew in his »Draft Constitution « as »a large number of enthusiasts pooling their resources (not primarily material resources) and assembling for action (music-making, performance, edification).« On the programme back in 1969 were Cardew’s »The Great Learning« and Cage’s »Atlas Eclipticalis«. By 1972, Cardew had turned away from Cage and Stockhausen and towards Marx, Lenin and Mao, not least as a result of his collaboration with amateurs. At the same time, however, the orchestra faded into the background. Cardew was killed in a mysterious car accident in 1981. But the effects of his short-lived ensemble proved longer-lasting, even finding its way onto the programme of the last Documenta in Athens. For Wien Modern 2018, Gunter Schneider and students from the MDW University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna will follow in the footsteps of the legendary improvisation ensemble.
