Transforming highly complex score notation into the higher magic of sound – this late-night solo recital will demonstrate just how that is done: the »Sei Capricci« for solo violin by Salvatore Sciarrino, who was born in Palermo in1947, are simply magical. In terms of virtuosity, the Sciarrino’s work multiplies the technical difficulties of Niccolò Paganini’s famous 24 Capricci. But in a live performance– when they are played by a violinist as unfazeable as Irvine Arditti – the Sicilian composer’s capricious sound paintings let the listener forget about questions of technical difficulty and gravity and open the way into a fascinating world full of mystery and nocturnal shadows. The London-based composer and painter James Clarke (whose biography also has Sicilian aspects) has dedicated a brand new, but no less virtuosic piece to Irvine Arditti with the feel of wild brushstrokes between pianissimo and fortissimo.
