If you have witnessed a live performance of Friedrich Cerha’s monumental orchestral composition Spiegel (mirrors) in its complete context of all seven parts – in Graz in 1972, in Vienna in 1977, 1989, 2006, 2011 or in Salzburg in 1996 – then you probably immediately wrote the 20th November into your diary. If you know the piece only partially, as a recording or not at all, we strongly encourage you to write the concert down as well. The “ur-beginning” of the first part branches outwards and inwards in various forms of movement. Sound frictions and tensions flow into a harmonic unison at the end of the last part. The feature-length look at the bigger picture, which reflects among other things on the relationship between the individual and the masses, was comparable to a revolutionary watershed moment of the avant-garde in 1960. The Wiener Konzerthaus, RSO Wien and Ingo Metzmacher invite you to take an up-to-date look at a milestone of music history.
