With his Makrokosmos, the composer and Pulitzer Prize winner George Crumb (1929–2022), who grew up in Appalachia, created a fantastic-poetic model of the world that shapes "the big and small rhythms of nature" into a round trip through space and time. Spiral movements in the "celestial ballroom" are axed on the twelve constellations of the zodiac. For two fascinating hours, they guide you through a complex edifice of astronomy, astrology, religion and myths of creation. The 50-year-old masterpiece, a milestone of (electronically augmented) piano music, will be put in motion by sirene Operntheater in the Jugendstiltheater with kinetic installations and performances by seven artists.
