Peter Conradin Zumthor titles his spectacular composition for piano player and piano tuner Things are going down. The piano player fans out well-tempered octaves by striking the keys quickly and repetitively. The piano tuner now begins to gradually tune the instrument down. The instrument, usually rigid in its pitches, begins to move, and the entire sound of the piano slowly plummets. The result is a constantly changing, immersive bell of sound that goes beyond conventional tunings. On the way down, startling acoustic swirls resound, and the grand piano begins to sing in many voices, to roar, to drone, to boom, to rattle, to whisper. The result is a highly energetic music that seems to touch us at our very core.
