ARDITTI 50.3

Program

Cast

Composed a good 18 years after the expressionist Second, the comparatively classical Third String Quartet marks "Schönberg's intention to return to the 'great forms' of the classical-romantic tradition", and indeed – slightly paradoxically in a sonata form orientated entirely on the circle of fifths - "under the conditions of dodecaphony" (Carl Dahlhaus). The task of making audible Schönberg's rapid, complex development from 1904 to 1936 – over two world wars and several steps of emigration – on four almost consecutive quartet evenings is no small feat, even for the Arditti Quartet, which is trained in all the speeds of the 21st century. But the direct connection of Schönberg with Clara Iannotta’s subtle sound palettes and the wild lines and planes of Iannis Xenakis (you have to hear Tetras live at least once in your life!) definitely helps with orientation in this advanced-level frenzy of speed. The commissioned piece of the third Arditti evening is Chaya Czernowin's fourth string quartet entitled Ezov.

We very much regret that the cellist of the Arditti Quartet broke his arm a few days before the start of the planned major anniversary project ARDITTI 50 (1st and 2nd November 2024 Wiener Konzerthaus, 4th and 5th November 2024 Musikverein) and wish him a speedy recovery. In consideration of the quartet's intensive preparations and rehearsals for this project, which have been ongoing for months, we have jointly decided to maintain the integrity of the programme and the quartet and not to look for short-term replacements for parts of the programme. We are working to reschedule all four concerts unchanged to 2025; the new dates will be announced as soon as possible. Festival passes and individual tickets will remain valid. We thank you very much for your understanding and look forward to welcoming you to one or more of the remaining 140 events in the 37th edition of the festival.
