"Old boy", "open secret", "bittersweet", "former future" – "oxymora" are figures of speech linking two terms that fundamentally contradict or even exclude each other. This style device is used to dramatically amplify, to force the barely expressible or even the unspeakable into a pair of opposites and thereby express it. The inner contradiction of an oxymoron is deliberate and serves to consciously emphasise ambiguous, ambivalent or multi-layered content by mirroring the both/and in its wording. Schönberg and Pink Floyd – is that really a contradiction? Well-versed in the wide field of jazz as well as in improvisation on twelve-tone rows, we understand that what seems like a contradiction can be a source of inspiration. (Franz Hautzinger, Burkhard Stangl)
