In 2024, Wien Modern and echoraum, the legendary off-stage of the Viennese experimental scene, are jointly presenting three exciting international improv ensembles at Sechshauser Straße 66. The trio Jane in Ether from Berlin, with reinforcements from France and Lebanon, will be in residence for a week and perform the new programme they have developed on two evenings.

Before that, on Sunday, November 10th, there will be a highly prominent double feature in the 15th district: the quartet of Otomo Yoshihide, Sachiko M (both from Tokyo), Axel Dörner (Berlin) and Martin Brandlmayr (Vienna) has existed since a first performance at the Donaueschinger Musiktage 2005 at the invitation of Reinhard Kager. The first CD was recorded in 2010. The improvisation of the four musicians is characterised by their experimental and challenging approach to the instruments they have prepared themselves, which makes their concerts unique experiences. Dans les arbres, an improvisation quartet from Norway (Ivar Grydeland, Christian Wallumrød, Ingar Zach) and France (Xavier Charles) founded in 2004, will also gain reinforcements from Japan by Yumiko Tanaka, on the traditional long-necked lute shamisen. With unusual combinations of sound sources and a special sense for communication, they create spontaneous group compositions that are in a league of their own.
