He was one of the first conductors at Wien Modern and should also have been the one to conduct this concert with the Wiener Symphoniker. After his unexpected death in March 2024 (a few weeks after his 80th birthday), this evening was dedicated to Péter Eötvös. The soloist in his viola concerto Respond is Antoine Tamestit, the conductor (her first time on the Wiener Symphoniker podium) is Elena Schwarz. Together with Pierre-Laurent Aimard, both musicians take on the solo part in Dieter Schnebel's réactions II – however, in the spirit of Schnebel's playful score, the ‘orchestra’ they enter into dialogue with is the audience. Nina Šenk's highly virtuosic Konzert für Orchester will then be performed again by the Wiener Symphoniker, just like the piano concerto composed for Aimard by Clara Iannotta – who is the composer in focus at the Musikverein until November 4th with five of her works ready to be explored.
