Beat Furrer was 35 when his first opera, Die Blinden, premiered at Wien Modern – a hallmark moment both for the composer and the festival. 35 years and seven major works of music theatre later, Wien Modern, Klangforum Wien and the Wiener Konzerthaus are bringing his third scenic work, Begehren, to the stage. The concert performance of the piece by Klangforum, with the composer himself conducting the ensemble he co-founded, and with Sarah Aristidou and Christoph Brunner in the two roles of ‘She’ and ‘He’, was met with an enthusiastic response at the Salzburger Festspiele in July. The unattainability and loneliness of the two, the yearning without hope is shown in a shadowy world of sounds as a tragedy of seeing, like in the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. From the sound of the word ‘shadow’, flaring up in fragments and in sounds of breathing, Furrer creates another leading role – the vocal ensemble, whose fragile yet sustaining part is taken on here by Cantando Admont.
