Fifty (yes, fifty) pianos arranged all around the hall, all tuned one hundredth of a tone apart, and a chamber orchestra – Georg Friedrich Haas takes this totally utopian basic set-up to achieve astonishing levels of intensity that tap into new dimensions even by his standards. Starting out gentle, ethereal, almost like the strains of baroque music floating in from afar, in a matter of seconds it all turns into a futurist space opera; out of nothing, the sound suddenly seems to gain mass in space, becoming now dark and menacing, now as light as a feather. Hypnotic, unreal planes of sound begin to rotate, twisting definitively into the realm of three-dimensional space. Haas leaves no doubts even in the first minutes of his new piece: 11,000 Strings takes the listeners on a kind of journey through outer space, traversing a hitherto unknown space of sound.
