Hermann Markus Preßl, born 1939 in Altaussee, died 1994 in Greece, is both one of the most idiosyncratic composers of his time and one of the great unknowns in Austrian music and culture. He taught in Bad Aussee, Kabul and Graz (Klaus Lang and Bernhard Lang are among his students), traveled to India, Greece and Afghanistan, constructed machines as sound and noise generators and as carriers of circularly closed scores. For almost two years, the Austrian choreographer Willi Dorner worked in close collaboration with the family of the Styrian composer on his very personal musical-choreographic portrait, which will be premiered at the Volkskundemuseum Wien as part of Festival Wien Modern 2023. Over the course of two days, the rooms of Palais Schönborn will become the setting for a lovingly compiled walk through the music, aesthetics and objects of Hermann Markus Preßl. For about three hours each, on November 11 and 12, 2023, Preßl's magical world of sound and his approaches to infinity and the "Holy Nothing" will be brought to life by a number of contributors.
