An early work, now almost six decades old, by the then 30-year-old composer Helmut Lachenmann, now soon-to-be 87 years old, and a recently completed "parting work" stand at the beginning and end of this evening with the Ensemble Recherche. What all the works have in common in this programme is a strength of new music that unites several generations – the astonishing power of the imagination in the open country far from the beaten track.
