Sofia Gubaidulina, like Bach, "stands for the connection between the rational and the irrational", David Geringas recently wrote in the FAZ on the composer's 90th birthday. On the occasion of the world premiere of her orchestral work The Wrath of God at Wien Modern during lockdown in 2020, she herself said that music festivals are "the most important form of humanity's resistance to intellectual decline in general. Musical activity is enormously important and healing for the world." For the festival opening in 2022, Matthias Pintscher brings this powerful statement live to the stage in his debut on the podium of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. His new violin concerto for Leila Josefowicz also charts a way out of the lockdown. Oh, and about Tableau, Lachenmann's "'rehearsal' of magical props", and Kurtág's grandiose Stele: you have to hear them.
