The percussion instruments of the classical orchestra and the individual parts of the drum set originate from military music. There, they had primarily strategic functions which continued to have an atmospheric effect on classical and romantic orchestral music for a long time. The project Martialische Untertöne (Martial Undertones) examines how the military past of the drum set affects listening, how timpani and trumpets, deep drums and driving rhythms are associated with very specific characteristics. Young musicians from the Tulln Music School, together with Elisabeth Flunger and Cordula Bösze, develop musical scenes, on the basis of percussion sounds and typical phrases and quotations, that trace the deep layers of military legacy in music.
