A House of Call. My Imaginary Notebook is a four-part song recital for orchestra with absent, recorded voices, to which the Ensemble Modern Orchestra responds in 15 movements, never the same twice. Heiner Goebbels has collected voice recordings from 1906 to 2017 in his imaginary notebook. The pioneering composer and theatre-maker places the sound, mood, drama and tragedy of this diversity of human voices at the centre of this major work for the stage. In the mysterious borderland between narration, rhythm and sound, Heiner Goebbels unfolds a very subjective world map of humanity. In formats such as call and response, speech acts, rhymes, laments and incantations, he lets the content shine through with a certain touch – for example in recordings of descendants of the Nama and Herero, who were almost wiped out by German soldiers in one of the first genocides of the 20th century. As long-standing partners with a great deal of patience for experimentation and development, Heiner Goebbels and the Ensemble Modern Orchestra from Frankfurt make tender creative interventions in light, sound, space and movement, making A House of Call one of the most unusual orchestral projects in recent years. The production, which has been acclaimed by audiences and critics, can be experienced at Wien Modern on the 19th of November at the Volkstheater.
