The music of Polwechsel cannot be explained, let alone "explained away." The final works possess enormous complexity, from their multidisciplinary beginnings to their final realisations. We enter them as composite constructs, as multiple environments; their subtle and complex instabilities invite and reward revisitation. Part of the joy of the studio, the laboratory, lies in the fact that its final assemblages swallow up any notion of the "original," whether it is a live performance or a score, the works expanding and evading any encapsulation as they move outward.
