Concert

Tuning of Mind and Body. Eröffnungskonzert Wien Modern

Program

Cast

Even the breathtaking virtuosa Tabea Zimmermann, Ernst von Siemens musicaward-winner of the year, had to “learn to play the viola all over again” for this concert: thanks to Enno Poppe, the string orchestra forms a kind of underfloor heating, with “warmth that comes from the depths”, under adventurous solo glissando curves that resemble the Chinese Erhu. Germán Toro Pérez, with two harps and two pianos in quarter tone distance, opens up a subtle sound space full of overtones for the RSO Vienna. Hugues Dufourt reflects Claude Monet’s immersive surround painting Water Lilies: The Two Willows with an expanded colour palette in his new large-scale orchestral work. And the soft sound revolutionary Pauline Oliveros uses her Tuning Meditation (which turned out to be a Zoom comfort during weeks of lockdown) to tune not only the instruments, but also body and mind.
