To mark Schönberg's 150th birthday, Wien Modern, the RSO Vienna, ACOM Austrian Composers and the Arnold Schönberg Center called for orchestral works for the Claudio Abbado Concert. The three works chosen by the jury are by Tanja Elisa Glinsner, Shiqi Geng and Marios Joannou Elia. They will be brought to life by conductor Susanne Blumenthal at her RSO debut in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein. With pianist Nicolas Hodges, the programme also includes one of the most remarkable works by one of Arnold Schönberg's most remarkable students: the unusual seating arrangement of the musicians and the unclassical conducting technique in John Cage's Concert for piano and orchestra caused what was probably the last truly scandalous concert in the Viennese musical scene, in 1959.
